motor trade insurance comparison is proud to support Road Safety Week 2018.

What is Road Safety Week?

Road Safety Week is an annual event to raise awareness of the importance of road safety. The event is organized by road safety charity Brake. Last year’s event was a great success, with many individuals and businesses throughout the UK getting involved.

The focus for 2018

This year’s Road Safety Week will run from the 19th to the 25th of November, with the theme being Bike Smart. Cyclists and motorcyclists make up a large number of the deaths on UK roads each year. Because bikes don’t provide the same level of protection as a car, collisions involving cyclists are often fatal or results in life-changing injuries. The same is true for motorcyclists.

Cycling in particular is an extremely healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to driving. Unfortunately a lot of people are put off from cycling due to safety concerns. The roads in the UK are hardly optimized for cyclists to begin with and it’s a sad reality that a lot motorists simply view cyclists as a nuisance. However making roads safer for cyclists is beneficial in a number of ways and not just for those who are already cycling. By making roads safer for cyclists it will encourage others to take it up and help to reduce the number of cars and pollution.

The three main areas where Brake wants to effect change with the Bike Smart focus in 2018 are as follows –

  • Raise awareness with policy-makers by getting them to invest in better infrastructure for cyclists as well as mandating life-saving technology
  • Raising awareness with motorists by encouraging them to be more mindful of cyclists by driving safely and giving them plenty of space
  • Encouraging both cyclists and motorcyclists to be Bike Smart by riding safely and using the appropriate equipment

How can I get involved?

People get involved in Road Safety Week in a lot of different ways. One way is to make the Brake Pledge and encourages others at your school or workplace to do the same.
